Gloria Paulsen
Gloria Paulsen, 84 Director of nursing at Doctors' Hospital Gloria Paulsen, 84, of Oakwood, the retired director of nursing at the former Doctors' Hospital, died Sunday in Samaritan Hospice, Voorhees, N.J. Mrs. Paulsen successfully completed treatment for breast cancer in 2018. However, in September she was diagnosed with leukemia - a belated consequence of the chemotherapy she had received. Born Gloria Finn in Brooklyn, she was a graduate of Fontbonne Hall Academy High School. She married Harold Paulsen in 1954; they resided for a short time in Valdosta, Ga., where he was stationed in the Air Force, before settling in Brooklyn to start a family. In 1963, shortly before the opening of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, they relocated to Oakwood. In the early 1970s, as a mother of five, Mrs. Paulsen went back to school, earning her associate's degree in nursing and bachelor's degree in psychology from Staten Island Community College. She then worked as a nurse primarily on the night shift at the former Doctors' Hospital in Concord. She continued her education at Hunter College in Manhattan the following decade, earning a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She rose to the position of director of nursing, serving as the hospital's primary administrator on weekends. She retired in the early 2000s. Mrs. Paulsen leaves a legacy of deep involvement in the life of her children and grandchildren. Before and after the 2000 death of her husband of 45 years, Harold, she traveled extensively with them. She especially enjoyed trips to Walt Disney World in Florida, and had taken a family trip there in August. Her daughter, Nancy Baione, died in 2005. Mrs. Paulsen was the loving mother of Marylinda Schoifet and her husband, Scott; Geralyn Paulsen; Michael; and Kenneth and his wife, Sandy. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, is handling arrangements, which will include visiting hours Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be a Funeral Mass Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Richmond. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. Colonial Funeral Home 2819 Hylan Blvd. Staten Island, NY 10306 (718) 351-5858
