Michael J. Donohue, 79 S.I. Ferry retiree loved spending time with his grandchildren Michael J. Donohue, 79, of Castleton Corners, passed away on Nov. 1, 2019. He was the beloved husband of Dolores (nee Coppello); devoted father of Camille Sandberg (Steven) and Sean (Elizabeth), and cherished grandfather of Dylan, Olivia, Ryan, Kaela, Colin, and Brendan Michael was born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens Village and attended Brooklyn Tech High School. At 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy and earned the rank of Quartermaster, serving on two Fletcher-class destroyers, the USS Colahan and the USS Mullaney, in the Pacific Fleet from 1957-1961. Upon his honorable discharge, Michael joined the Seafarers International Union and sailed around the world as a merchant seaman from 1961-1968. Upon coming ashore, he joined the Staten Island Ferry as a deck hand and spent most of his career in the position of ferry terminal supervisor, retiring in 1996. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his family. He loved attending his grandchildren's school and sporting events and was always involved in their daily lives. Funeral is Wednesday from Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Ave., West Brighton. Funeral Mass is at 10:45 a.m. at St. Teresa R.C. Church. Private cremation to follow.
