Edith (Purdy) Steele-Huff
Edith Helen (Purdy) Steele-Huff BLOOMFIELD - Edith Helen (Purdy) Steele-Huff, age 89, passed away on Oct. 29, 2019, in St George, Utah. She is survived by three children, Pamela (Michael) Headlee, Jeffrey (Debra) Steele and Joel (Jaylene) Steele; 23 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Elizabeth (Harry) Schwarzweller and Ada (Duane) Horton; as well as her sister-in-law, Mary Purdy. She was predeceased by her husbands, Stanley O. Steele in 1998 and later, Gerald Huff in 2017; grandson, Alex Headlee; and brother, John L. Purdy. Edith was born on Feb. 16, 1930, in Canandaigua to John J. and Helen (Bliss) Purdy. She grew up on a farm in Canandaigua and attended a one-room schoolhouse, one mile from her home until eighth grade. Edith was a graduate of Canandaigua Academy. After high school, she attended Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in culinary arts. Edith and Stanley were married on June 23, 1951, at the Presbyterian Church in Canandaigua. They settled on their family farm in East Bloomfield. In 1960, Edith and Stan became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Thereafter, she devoted much of her time and energy participating in church activities and service. Edith was an avid genealogist and was known as a wonderful cook and baker. She was active in the Centerfield Homemakers and was an accomplished water colorist. Edith married Gerald in 2002 and they moved to St. George in 2015. Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren who loved spending time with her. Friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home Inc., 47 N. Main St., Canandaigua and Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 365 Parrish St., Canandaigua. Her funeral service will immediately follow visitation at the church. Interment will be in East Bloomfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The East Bloomfield Historical Society, PO Box 212, East Bloomfield, NY 14443. Condolences may be offered at www.johnsonkennedy.com .
