In memory of
Barbara I. Masterson
Barbara I. Masterson
May 19, 1944 - Oct. 26, 2019
On Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019, Barbara passed away peacefully in her sleep. A beloved Catholic, she accepted that her time had come and it is the will of God to take her into his compassionate and caressing arms.
She was born May 19, 1944, the only child of Heiner and Gisella Herderich, in Uffenheim, Germany. She came to the United States when she was four. She grew up in Venice and Mar Vista, Calif. Barbara graduated from Venice High School and later got her Bachelor in Art History from Cal State Domingues Hills.
She met her husband of 45 years, Michael, in advertising. They were married in Manhattan Beach, Calif., with Michael's uncle, Father Frank Masterson, S.J., the former president of Jesuit High School officiating. She was an amazing, loving and devoted, wife, mother and grandmother to her two children, Meagan and Kevin and her only grandchild, Zachary Zugschwerdt.
She leaves fond, lasting memories of her German and American brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. She adds her well wishes to all her multitude of friends through the years and a huge thank you and "Air Hugs" for their kindness and friendship over the past decades. Her mantra was to "Live every day to it's fullest," and SHE DID!!
A true lady of vivacious dignity, who lit up every room she stepped into, she will be dearly missed. Beside family and friends, her greatest joys in life were gardening, appreciating art and traveling worldwide. For 17 years, Barbara put up the most valiant fight against the Sarcoma that ravaged most parts of her body. But even through all the pain and suffering, she maintained her positive attitude, engaging and endearing personality and uncompromising caring way for others.
Known for her creativity, she was an award-winning member of the Oregon Society of Artists and a renowned Plein Air artist whose unique scenic cards remain available for purchase at The Arrangement on N.E. Fremont, The Pittock Mansion and The Grotto. Before moving to Portland 12 years ago, once Michael retired after 32 years with CBS Radio in Hollywood, she was docent for 20 years at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and a member of the South Bay Charity Organization Las Candalistas. It's ironic, but most recently she did the cover art for their event this past October 17, 2019. Since being in Oregon, she was a docent and patron at the Portland Art Museum and the Pittock Mansion. She especially loved giving tours to children, developing the very popular and appreciated program "Art at your fingertips."
Her family deeply thanks with their utmost gratitude, the medical staff of doctors and nurses at Providence Medical Center and OHSU.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 at the Church of the Madeleine, on N.E. 24th. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Barbara's name may be made to the charity of your choice.
