Catherine Helen O'Brien
O'Brien, Catherine Helen 12/26/1932 - 10/26/2019 Catherine "Kay" O'Brien, age 86, of South Lyon, peacefully entered eternal life on October 26, 2019. She was born on December 26, 1932 in South Lyon, Michigan; daughter to the late Smith and Violet (Balden) O'Brien. She is survived by her brother Jerome, sister-in-law Diane-who was her dedicated caregiver for the past 8 years-as well as two nephews and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James, and her sister Caroline (Stewart) Catherine graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1951 then continued her studies first at the University of Michigan School of Education and later at Eastern Michigan University where she received her Master's Degree. She began her teaching career in kindergarten and first grade classrooms in Santa Barbara and San Francisco, California, before teaching elementary school at a U.S. Army base in Germany. Following that, she returned to South Lyon where she taught for 25 more years before retiring in 1999. Her greatest love was teaching and Catherine dedicated her professional life to enlightening and inspiring her young students at the very beginning of their educational careers. She was highly regarded by her students and peers and received several awards over the course of her career from the South Lyon School system. Known by many for her mild manner and calm demeanor, her gentleness and sense of humor showed her strong Irish heritage. A memorial mass will be held for Catherine on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 11:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 830 S. Lafayette St. in South Lyon, with a luncheon at the church immediately following the service.
