Mary Lou Feenstra
Mary Lou Feenstra Palm Springs - Mary Lou was born in Aberdeen, Idaho on May 17, 1931 to John and Ruth Christofferson. She died October 15, 2019 in Palm Springs, California. Mary Lou lived much of her youth in Colton, California with her older sisters, Merle and Alice, and her younger brother John. She left home to attend UCLA where she earned her degree in English and returned to the San Bernardino area. She met her husband Ken Feenstra while singing in a choir and they both enjoyed a lifelong love of music and singing. During 60 years of marriage, Mary Lou and Ken lived in Berkeley, Palos Verdes Estates, and Palm Springs, California. For more than 40 years, Mary Lou was an active member of the Palm Springs community in a variety of ways. Her friends and family will remember her as a docent at the Palm Springs Art Museum, a tutor for English learners at the Library, and a teen advocate with the CASA program. She was also a valued member of the O'Donnell Golf Club and St. Paul's in the Desert Episcopal Church. Mary Lou had a variety of careers and interests. She seemed most proud and fulfilled by becoming a lawyer and practicing law with the firm of Tuverson and Hillyard in Palm Springs. Mary Lou is predeceased by her husband Ken Feenstra and sisters Merle Woodstra and Alice Halm. She is survived by her brother John (Vivian); daughters, Julia Harding (Bob) and Claudia Freeman (Rene'); four grandchildren, Benjamin, Annemarie, Breo, and Valerie; and three great-grandchildren, Noah, Stella, and Fiona. A private memorial service is planned for a later date. Her family plans to donate a bench in memory of Mary Lou and Ken to be placed in downtown Palm Springs.
