In memory of

Shawn Christopher Smith
Nov. 2, 1976 - Oct. 13, 2019
Shawn Christopher Smith passed away Oct. 13, 2019 in a fatal car accident. At 42 years old, his passing was painless and far too soon. He was born Nov. 2, 1976 in Lewistown, Mont., to parents Roger and Marcia Smith.
He moved to Seattle, where he joined Forgotten Works Gallery and met his wife, Rachelle Clark, in 2001. In 2003, Shawn and Rachelle moved to Portland, fell in love with the city, art and music community and decided to set roots and call the region home. He and his wife formed JOAT Studio, where he focused on his fine art painting and sculpture in his studio in the 1627 N.E. Alberta Street Building for seven and half years, then later the North Coast Seed Building for six years.
He worked at AB Finishing for 14 years as a sandblaster and metal finisher. During his last year in this world, he and his wife had moved to a five acre property in the Willamette Valley where he enjoyed what he referred to as "His Dream Job" with Yamhill Valley Vineyards. In all of his endeavors and interests, Shawn was a master craftsman, pouring his thought and intention into every detail of the smallest task. Infamously accident prone, yet immanently capable.
Shawn was a fiercely loyal friend to everyone lucky enough to call him so and an adopted Big Brother to many. He loved with his whole heart. Always the 1st to show up on Moving Day and the last to leave after a party clean up. He showed up. He came through. A master storyteller…repeatedly. Prankster and all around character, he brought infinite joy and jest to everyone he encountered.
There are not words to encompass all his talents and character or to express how much he meant to everyone that knew him. He leaves a giant hole in this world with his passing. His wife, Rachelle, was blessed to have been able to love him, call him a best friend, her other half, for 18 beautiful years. He is also survived by an extensive, loving family in Montana, a verbose community of friends that became family in Portland, along with an entire forested community of hummingbirds, migrating birds, chipmunks and squirrels, Thunder, AKA Mr. Fluffers, Blue and Holmes.
