Richard D. "Dick" Barkes Sr.
age 98, of Westlake, born Sept. 21, 1921, passed away Sept. 28, 2019. Beloved husband of Jo-Ann (ne DuCly) for 70 years. Devoted father of Richard, David (deceased), Diane Wallace (husband Michael), and Alys Virzi; cherished grandfather of Brian Wallace (wife Heather), Kevin Wallace, and Talia Virzi; great-grandfather of Evelyne Swansiger-Wallace and Brendan Wallace. A genuinely kind man and gentle spirit who held no grudges and treated all with respect. He served his country during World War II as a captain in the 302nd Airdrome Squadron; memories of which he enjoyed reflecting on and sharing later in life. Dick spent his career at CEI in Mechanical Engineering, retiring as an Analyst after 36 years. Always wanting to stay busy, he began working at Gale's Garden Center in Westlake, where many of his co-workers came to love him over the next 18 years. Dick enjoyed reading, spending time outdoors, and camping at Ohio's state parks. Dick's family will forever cherish their memories of him and the example he set.
