Song was born May 5, 1954, in Dong Dang, Xieng Khouang, Laos to Na Her (Nom Hawj Vaj) and Yer Vu (Ntxawm Vwj) and received his High School diploma in Nam Hia, Saybory, Laos. He was a soldier with the Hmong "Secret Army" (Special Guerilla Unit) with US Allied Forces during the Secret War in Laos and came to the United States in 1975, as a Hmong refugee.
