Odessa Pitts Johnson
Odessa Pitts Johnson was born July 10, 1932, in Bessemer, Alabama. She was the second child of the now departed Mr. Jessie James Pitts, Sr. and Mrs. Luella Palmer Pitts; her siblings, Jessie James, Jr., Doris Louise and Samuel Lee, preceded her in death. An attendee of the Bessemer City Schools, she developed an early thirst for education. She was a 1948 honors graduate of Dunbar High School. Thereafter, she enrolled at Miles College, completing studies with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Summer studies at Temple University aided in her obtainment of her Masters in Education from Alabama State University. Her teaching career commenced in the Lawrence County Schools, followed by three years in the Pickens County Schools. In 1957, she was afforded the opportunity to return home to Jefferson County's Dolomite School, then Woodward Junior High School. At the onset of school integration, she was assigned to Midfield and West Jefferson Schools for very brief periods. Her next assignment to Minor High School from which she retired in 1992. Canaan Baptist Church of Bessemer has been her Church home for over 80 years. At Canaan she has served as Sunday School Teacher, Kindergarten Board President and Musician. Until her demise, she was a regular and active member of the Sunday School, Trustee for more than 30 years and Historian. Married to the now departed Howard Johnson, she was the consummate wife and mother. Odessa and Howard founded Johnson Memorial Funeral Directors. A licensed Funeral Director and Corporate Secretary of Johnson Memorial, she was a Life Member of both the Alabama and National Funeral Directors and Morticians Associations. She was Past President of the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association Ladies Auxiliary and Alabama Ladies Auxiliary Member. Other service includes Dunbar-Abrams Alumni National Treasurer, local Secretary and Foundation Board Member. National Life Member of Miles College Alumni and Past Secretary of the Jefferson County Education Retirees Association. Memories of a Legacy of Love remain with her children, Eunice J. Rogers (Bernard), Cassandra Y. Johnson and Howard G. Johnson; grandchildren, Dr. Tamara E. Rogers, Daniel E. Rogers, Howard Jace Johnson and Michael Clemon Johnson; sisters-in-law, Mattie J. Carrington and Delores K. Pitts. Calling Hours at Johnson Memorial, Bessemer, Sunday 11:00 until 5:00. Twilight Service of Memory is 6:00 until 8:00 at Canaan Baptist, 824 15th Street, Bessemer.
