Mary Lou J. 'Betz' Fitzgerald
March 7, 1932 - Sept. 19, 2019
Mary Lou passed away in the evening of Sept. 19, 2019, at home after a short illness. She was surrounded by her children, extended family and many friends in her final days.
Mary Lou was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., to John Betz and Mary Lou (Killingsworth) Betz. She spent a wonderful childhood in Allison Park, Pa., before moving to Portland with her family her senior year of high school. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1949 and attended Pacific Business College.
Mary Lou met the love of her life, Gerald "Jerry" Fitzgerald soon after moving to Portland. They were married in 1952 and moved to the Parkrose area three years later.
Mary Lou raised five children in that home, where she would live the rest of her life. After the last of her children began school, she worked as an executive secretary. Once they retired, Mary Lou and Jerry traveled both the U.S. and abroad. They also found the time to attend most of their grandchildren's sporting, musical, school and religious events.
Mary Lou was an excellent cook and a gracious hostess, forever baking cookies and pies for her family and friends to enjoy. She was also very active in her church, helping with spaghetti dinners and bazaars and acting as secretary for the Women's Guild.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; and her son, John. She is survived by her siblings, Roberta Duvall and Tom Lande; children, Celinda (James McGraw), Gerald Jr., Susan (Malcolm Fylan) and Marjorie (Ronald Eldredge); grandchildren, Amy Fylan, Gerald Fitzgerald III, David Fylan (Ashlei), Michelle Faris (Stuart), Ryan Hunter, James McGraw, Dalton Hardy and Clayton Hardy (Shadia); and great-grandchild, Landon Fylan.
