In memory of
Daniel Shaps Palm Desert - On Wednesday September 24, 2019 Daniel Shaps, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at the age of 95 in Solana Beach CA. Dan was born on May 1, 1924 in Cleveland Ohio to Joseph and Tillie (Gordon) Shaps. A graduate of Shaw High School. He served as an Ensign in the Merchant Marines during World War II sailing the world as a navigator on a tanker ship. In 1948, he married Bernice Wexler and they raised their two children Joel and Betsy and shared the next 50 years of their lives together until she passed away in 1998. Dan graduated from Ohio University with a BSC degree on the GI bill and then earned a Master's Degree from Harvard Business School in 1950. He began his career in Cleveland as a financial executive. In 1965, Dan moved his family to Dallas, TX to become the CFO of a large department store. During his career, Dan lived in Chicago, IL and then relocated to West Palm Beach FL and Carmel CA before he finally retired to Palm Desert CA where he and Bernice pursued their passion of playing golf. Dan was lucky to find Lila Kadner in 1999 and they spent the rest of their lives in a loving supportive relationship. Sadly, Lila passed away a month before Dan. Dan had a brilliant mind (he was still trading stock options into his 90's). He would engage with everyone with genuine interest and was always eager to share his knowledge. He had an original sense of humor, which he passed down to the next three generations. He was an athlete and fitness buff and after battling heart disease in his 50's, he adopted a strict vegetarian diet that was a testament to his longevity. His motto was "if a food tastes good, you should spit it out!" He is survived by his daughter, Betsy Shaps, son, Joel Shaps, daughter-in-law Sally Shaps, granddaughters Brandi Weinstein and Lisa Shaps and great grandchildren Alex and Marissa Weinstein. "Papa Dan" was loved and adored by his family and many friends whose lives he touched. There will be memorial celebration of Dan's life in Rancho Sante Fe CA at the end of Oct.
