Joseph F. Cummings, 71 Retired New York City teacher, native Islander Joseph F. Cummings, 71, of Peekskill, N.Y., passed away on Sept. 23, 2019 of heart failure. Born on April 15, 1948 on Staten Island to Helen (nee Swanton) and Edward Cummings. He was a lifelong resident of Staten Island until moving to Peekskill in 2014. He worked for the New York City Board of Education until he retired in 2003. He taught Social Studies and Economics at Murry Bergtraum High School from 1980 until his retirement. He then went to teach at Moore Catholic High School for two years. He was very active in the Mock Trials done at Murry Bergtraum HS. His team receiving first place in the Mock Trial Tournament in 1981. He was a pioneer in inaugurating "Top Of The Class" on Manhattan Cable TV in December, 1985. He attended St. Peter's High School for Boys, Hunter College for his undergraduate degree and received his Master's Degree from New York University. He loved his cats and enjoyed swimming and politics and was an avid reader. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Santospirito; his brother, Edward; his nieces, Julianne and Melissa Santospirito, and his brother-in-law, Christian, and his sister-in-law, Judi. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home in Putnam Valley, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to an animal rescue organization of your choice.
