John William DeCorato
John William DeCorato, 95 WWII veteran of Okinawa campaign, publisher of academic books John William DeCorato, 95 years old, died Sept. 24, 2019 at his home at the Esplanade, 1415 Richmond Avenue, Staten Island. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on Oct. 27, 1923. Following a family move to Brooklyn, he attended Lafayette High School and later Brooklyn College. John served in the US Army between 1943 and 1946, where he saw active combat, including the invasion of Okinawa until the end of World War II. He moved to Staten Island in 1966 and lived most of his life in Grasmere. He was the owner of Gordian Press, a publishing house for scholarly and college books. He was an avid golfer well into his 80s and attended St. Sylvester's Church. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Angela; three children and spouses, Linda DeCorato Perrotta (Joseph), John W DeCorato Jr. (Rache Simmons), and Douglas DeCorato (Carolyn Raia), and four grandchildren, John DeCorato, Michael DeCorato, Jacqueline Marie Perrotta, and Marcus Christopher DeCorato. Viewing will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp Lane, Staten Island, from 2 to 4 and7 to 9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Sylvester's Church, 854 Targee Street, Staten Island, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 25.
