Dr. William Robert (Bob) Roland
Dr. William Robert (Bob) Roland, age 90, of Andalusia, died Friday, September 6, 2019, at home in Mountain Brook, Alabama, where he lived with family for the past year. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 28, 1929, to Mary (Price) and Frank Roland, Dr. Roland spent his childhood years in Greenville, Alabama, and then moved to Andalusia while in high school. Upon graduation from Andalusia High School in 1947, Dr. Roland attended Sewanee University and graduated from the University of Alabama. He was granted early admission to the University of Alabama's third dental school class, graduating in 1954. Immediately upon graduation, Dr. Roland married his high school sweetheart, Flora Mallette, beginning a remarkable, joyful, and devoted partnership that lasted 63 years until Mrs. Roland's death in 2017. They began their married lives in Florida, where Dr. Roland served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Dental Corp for two years. He then opened his dental practice in Andalusia, where he skillfully and conscientiously served others for 35 years. Dr. Roland served as President of the Andalusia Rotary Club, and was honored with the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church. Dr. Roland will be remembered for his integrity, his love and enjoyment of his family and friends, and his zestful pursuit and mastery of an extraordinary range of interests and hobbies. Dr. Roland was predeceased by his parents, his wife, and his brother, Frank Roland, Jr. His survivors are his daughters, Celia Roland Smyly and Mary Lynn Roland Williams; son-in-law, Carl Smyly, all of Birmingham; five grandchildren, Marie Smyly of Foley, Alabama, Robert Smyly (Gabrielle), Frank Smyly, Mary Katherine Williams Bartlett (Andrew), all of Birmingham, and Lauren Williams Rogers (John), of Mobile, Alabama; two infant great-grandchildren, Nathan Bartlett and Barnes Rogers. Dr. Roland is also survived by his sister-in-law, Michaelyn Mallette Zorn (Jack), nephews and nieces, Steve Roland (Cindy), Mike Roland (Debbie), Suzanne Boyington (Roger), and Flora Talada (Richard). A memorial Service will be held Saturday, September14, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church of Andalusia, Alabama, at 11:00 AM, with a graveside service immediately following at the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. Reverend Brennan Peacock and Reverend Tim Trent will officiate the service. Donations in memory of Dr. Roland can be made to the Building Fund of the Andalusia First United Methodist Church.
