John Edwin Shepherd
John Edwin Shepherd – age 96; a native of Birmingham, AL and a longtime resident of Mobile, AL died Sunday, September 8, 2019 at his residence. Mr. Shepherd was a graduate of West End High School where he served as captain of the football team and President of the Student Body. He served his country as a part of the greatest generation in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He participated in Air Offensive Japan and witnessed the surrender of Japan to the Allies. After his service was completed, he graduated from Birmingham Southern College and later he received his MBA from Samford University. Mr Shepherd was Secretary-Treasurer of Southern Life and Health Insurance Company in Birmingham and retired in 1988 after more than 25 years. He was a kind, generous and learned man who was everyone's favorite. He will be well remembered by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of more than 75 years, Anne Tabor Shepherd (Mammy) of Mobile, AL; one daughter, Barbara Shepherd (Bernard) Malkove of Mobile, AL; two sisters, Mildred Shepherd of Huntsville, AL and Ruth Shepherd Bozeman of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his parents, Grant and Iva Baker Shepherd; and six brothers, Andrew Grant Shepherd, Jr., Cecil B. Shepherd, Donald Shepherd, Robert O. Shepherd, David Shepherd and James Shepherd. He was known and loved as Pappy to a his three grandchildren, John Millen Griser (Beth) Schmohl, Jr. of Richmond, VA, Courtney Schmohl (Wayne) Barrack of Richmond, VA, and David Shepherd (Sarah) Schmohl of Mobile, AL; six great-grandchildren, Mary Lynne Schmohl (Reid Hamilton) of Atlanta, GA, John Millen "Trey" Schmohl, III of Richmond, VA, Aimee Victoria Barrack of Richmond, VA, Edwin Wayne Barrack, Jr. of Richmond, VA, David Shepherd Schmohl, Jr. of Mobile, AL and Clara Anne Schmohl of Mobile, AL; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Many thanks Dr Thomas C. McGee and to the loving caregivers at Sitter Service Home Care – we were blessed to have them care for him. Services will be held at 10 A.M. on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at the A. Carl Adkins Chapel of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Private burial services will be held in Birmingham at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shepherd Center Foundation, 2020 Peachtree Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30309-1465, St. Ignatius Church Building Fund, Dauphin Way Methodist Church or your favorite charity.
