Salvatore Guastella, 96 1923 - 2019 Sal Guastella, formerly of Staten Island, died on August 15, 2019 in Laguna Hills, CA after a brief illness. He was 96 years old. The son of John and Concetta Guastella, Sal was born on May 03, 1923 and raised in Manhattan. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and completed one year at New York University before being drafted into the US Army in 1941. He was assigned to the Army Air Forces and was stationed in the Philippines in an air-sea rescue unit, working as a crew chief on a variety of aircraft. After his discharge from the army, Sal completed his studies at NYU and took a job with P.J. Ballantine and Sons. In 1962, he left Ballantine to join The Prudential Insurance Company, where he worked until his retirement in 1985. Sal married Marie D'Aiello in 1950 and they raised three children in the Park Hill neighborhood of Staten Island. The marriage ended in divorce in 1992. Sal then moved to Naples, FL where he met and married Shirley Horton in 1993. Upon Shirley's passing in 2013, Sal moved to Laguna Woods, CA to be closer to his children. Sal was an avid amateur athlete. In his younger years he played handball and baseball. In his early 40s, he took up golf, falling in love with the game from his first tee shot, and he continued to play until age 95. Sal was a devoted father to his three children and a friendly, outgoing guy who never forgot a name. He enjoyed telling jokes, followed politics with great enthusiasm, and read the New York Times from front to back every single day. Sal was preceded in death by his wife Shirley and sister Sarah Marotta. He is survived by his daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Harry Verni, and his sons Peter and John. Services for Sal were held privately by his family.
