Col. Charles Herzig USA Retired
Col. Herzig died at his home in Mountain Brook, Alabama after a long illness, Tues. Aug. 27,2019.He was with his wife and his priest at the time of his death. Born July 9, 1938 in West Caldwell, N.J, the son of Aloysius and Anna Mae Herzig. Col. Herzig graduated from Seton Hall University, receiving a Masters Degree from George Washington University. He also graduated from both the Army and Navy War Colleges. Making the Army his career, he advanced rapidly receiving the Legion Of Merit, Bronze Star, and many other honors during his two Vietnam Tours. He retired from the Army in 1983.His Second retirement was from Lockheed Martin Corp. where he served as Acting Director of Electronic Engineering. A man of many talents, Col. Herzig, having sold all his paintings, concentrated his retirement years as a Master Wood Carver also Designing and Constructing Architectural leaded glass. Enjoying their oceanfront home in Florida, Col. Herzig fished almost everyday until he and Mrs.Herzig moved to Mountain Brook. Col. Herzig is survived by his wife of 36 years, Elizabeth Lewis Herzig and six Children from his first marriage,to the late Patricia Bak Herzig: Dr. Charles T. Herzig, Dr.Lisa A. Herzig, Mark Herzig, John Herzig, Paul Herzig, and Jamie Herzig. Grandchildren are Aaron Lunt, Miles Duggan, Cerece Duggan, Aidan Herzig, Gabriel Herzig, Bryan Herzig, Tren Herzig, and a special step grandson W. Kimball Rice, Jr. Interment service will be later this fall at Arlington National Cemetery. Mrs. Herzig is thankful for Father Craig Smalley's Pastoral Care Committee, Cathedral Church of the Advent.
