In memory of
Edward Rudolph (ER) Johnson
On 06 Aug 19, Edward Rudolph (ER) Johnson went home to the Lord. He was born on 08 Aug 1924 in Birmingham, Alabama. Known as "Ed" by all, his big smile and personality were larger than life. Not overwhelming, but always inclusive, he made everyone laugh with his stories and jokes. Ed grew up primarily in Woodlawn but also lived in other parts of Birmingham as a child. After leaving Woodlawn High School, he worked briefly for the railroad before joining the US Merchant Marine in 1942. He spent time in various US ports and delivered supplies to US and Allied troops in Russia through 1945. After the War, he joined the US Army where he played baseball with many greats including Hoyt Wilhelm. This led to a brief minor league baseball career, with Ed making it as high as A-Ball in Montgomery, Ala. After baseball, Ed returned to Birmingham and the railroad until he retired in 1992 after 50 years of service. He was an active member of McElwain Baptist Church, a baseball coach at Irondale Ball Park, and an avid handball player at the Jewish Community Center and YMCA, where he played with college football coaches Joe Paterno and Ara Parseghian. Early in his retirement, Ed moved to Panama City Beach, Florida where he would live out the remainder of his life, spending most days in the gym playing handball, working out, and making others laugh with his tall tales and youthful attitude. He is preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Turrentine, and two brothers, Bryant and Carl, and survived by the love of his life and wife of more than 52 years, Sue. He is also survived by three children – David (Cori), Jonathan (Cathy), and Pat (Jim), and seven grandchildren – Isaac, James, Jared, Lisa, Macie, Samantha, and Scott.
