Domenico 'Dominik' Militello, 94 Master chef, proud of his beautiful vegetable garden Domenico "Dominick" Militello, 94, passed away on June 13, 2019 at Carmel Richmond Health Care Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Palermo, Sicily, Dominick was one of seven children. He served in the Italian Army, migrated to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in 1958, and settled in South Beach in 2008. He was a talented blacksmith in Italy, working mainly on horseshoes and hardware. When arriving in the States, Dominick began working in the restaurant business and became a master chef at Grotto D'Oro Italian Restaurant in Sheepshead Bay, a position which he proudly held for over 37 years. Dominick was a parishioner of Holy Rosary Church and member of the Arrochar Friendship Club, both in South Beach. He was proud of his garden where he grew beautiful tomatoes, zucchini and basil. He also enjoyed watching boxing matches on TV. "Dad was a friendly and sociable gentleman who was well-liked by everyone," said his children. "He was a gentle soul and truly enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. " His daughter, Nancy Miceli, visited with him daily, lighting up his day the minute he saw her. He will be truly missed by the nurses and staff at Carmel Richmond, who enjoyed his company and his endearing and kind ways. Dominick enjoyed the friendships he made throughout his life. He loved entertaining at his home and playing cards with his friends at the park. Mr. Dominick Militello was the beloved husband of 49 years to Rosalia (née Bartolone) who passed away in 2004. He was the loving father of Nancy Miceli and her husband, Michael and Christian Militello; cherished grandfather of Michael Miceli, and his wife, Alexandra, and Anthony Miceli, who lovingly cut his grandfather's hair. He is also survived by his dear brother, Francesco and dearest sister-in-law, Laura Gambale and his many cherished nieces and nephews. A. Azzara Funeral Home, 183 Sand Lane has been entrusted with Mr. Militello's funeral arrangements which include visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass is at Holy Rosary Church on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Entombment follows at Resurrection Cemetery.
