James Reid Taylor Palm Desert - On Thursday, May 9, 2019, James Reid Taylor, avid hiker, crocheter, traveler, Grand Canyon enthusiast, husband and father passed away at the age of 89. Jim was born on April 6, 1930 in St. Maries, ID. After being orphaned at age 6, he went to live at the Hutton Settlement, Spokane, WA. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952. Jim and Diane Allen Smith were married on April 24, 1951 and raised four children. In 1960, while living in Chino, CA, and working for PacBell, Jim was offered the opportunity to relocate to Indio, CA where he lived until his death. While here he worked at Imperial Chrysler, the Automobile Club, Chief Auto Parts and finally found his home at the Coachella Valley Water District, where he retired July 10, 1992. During a push to quit smoking, he learned to crochet. He became very good at this. Winning 7 blue ribbons at the Date Festival and Riverside County Fair was a source of great pride. He also enjoyed driving to special events for Greyline Tours, hiking, boating, fishing and camping with friends and family. Jim met Karen Murray in 2002 in an Alzheimer's support group while he was caring for his wife. They became friends and eventually life partners. Jim is preceded in death by his eldest son, Gerald (Jerry), his wife, Diane and his sister, Mary Ann. He is survived by 3 children Jeff, Tennley, John, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
