James Newman Grabas Beloved son and brother, X-ray technician, U.S. Army veteran James Newman Grabas, 72, of Cedar Grove, N.J., died on June 11, 2019. Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave. (Rt. 23), Cedar Grove, N.J. 07009. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cedar Grove, with interment to follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton, N.J. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.shookscedargrove.com . Born in Orange, N.J., James lived in Newark, N.J., and settled in Cedar Grove when he was 11 years old. James, nicknamed by friends as "Big Jim Grabas," was a kicker for the Cedar Grove High School football team. He won many awards and trophies playing baseball, bowling, and billiards. During the Vietnam War, he honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1965 through 1968. Afterwards, he attended Stockton University, went on to Atlantic City Medical Center School and graduated as an X-ray technician. Later, he was a courier for DHL in Parsippany, N.J., until his retirement. Predeceased by his father, Michael Grabas, he is survived by his beloved mother, Elizabeth A. Saxon Grabas; devoted brothers, Michael Grabas Jr. and Thomas Grabas, as well as many family members and good friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, stjude.org .
