Marieta Arias Contreras
Marieta Argentina Arias Contreras Energetic self-starter owned many unique small businesses Marieta Argentina Arias Contreras, 93, of Silver Lake, passed away at Staten Island University Hospital North on Friday, June 7, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. Viewing is Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Harmon Funeral Home. Mass is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Carmel Church. Burial is at St. Peter's Cemetery. Mama Marieta was born in Ricaurter, Los Rios Ecuador, where she was home-schooled. She later lived in Balzar, Guayas, where she took accounting and nursing courses. She was known as a strong, independent, self-motivated woman who was full of love and a selfless generosity, always extending a hand to her many family members and friends. With a natural drive for hard work, she forged a successful career as an entrepreneur of many unique small businesses, including operating a sawmill, lumberyard, gas station, sales distributor of coffee and cocoa beans and managing a chicken farm. Mama Marieta also had a passion for agriculture and especially enjoyed cultivating rice and corn. It gave her pride to grow her own food to be shared with her family. With that same pride, she loved sewing and often created children's clothing for her children and grandchildren. In 1986 she moved to the USA and established roots in Staten Island, N.Y. Her family tree has since grown and blossomed in America, where she is survived by her sons, Julio and Miguel; daughters, Emma and Vilma; daughters-in-law, Manuela and Teresa; and sons-in-law, Ruben and Robert. She is also survived by grandchildren, Alberto, Marlon, Katerine, Veronica, Marieta, Rosa, Dayra, Xiomara, Miguel Jr., Fernando, Christian, Daniel, Jonathan and Justin; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She would often be heard saying in joy, "Ave Maria!" because indeed, she was deeply blessed by God with a full life. Harmon Funeral Home 571 Forest Ave. Staten Island, N.Y. 10310 (718) 442-5056
