Thomas "Tommy" Cammarata
Thomas 'Tommy' Cammarata, 93 Lived his entire life in South Beach; 'always the life of the party' Lifelong Islander and proud U.S. Army veteran, Thomas "Tommy" Cammarata, 93, passed away on June 3, 2019, after a long illness. Born May 7, 1926, Tommy was the youngest of 11 children born to Rosina (nee Fragapane) and Giuseppe Cammarata. His seven sisters and three brothers all predeceased him. Tommy lived his entire life in the same South Beach home in which he was born. He was an active parishioner of Holy Rosary Church in South Beach, receiving all of his sacraments, including his marriage to his lovely wife, Frances, in August of 1955. He and his wife, Fran were avid travelers and enjoyed trips to Aruba and Hawaii. They had a vacation home in the Poconos for many years that they also enjoyed. Tom served as a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Squadron, stationed in Hawaii during World War II. A longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Madonna Council, he also went every day, until his illness two years ago, to the Arrochar Friendship Club. Tommy directed the Glee Club and the SB Boardwalk Walking Club. He was also a proud member of Cespino-Russo American Legion Post in South Beach. He played football and softball in his younger days for the Robins Athletic Club. His niece, Elizabeth Cammarata, Tom and Fran's caregiver, said of her uncle, "Tom was always the life of the party, singing and dancing. He was a Giant fan in the winter and a Yankee fan in the summer. Tom had many nieces and nephews spread out across the country but was best known as beloved 'Papa Tommy' to Danny, Kristen, Nicolina and Daniella Caropreso, whom he adored." Thomas Cammarata was the beloved husband of 63 years to Frances (nee Pisarri). He is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews. A. Azzara Funeral Home, 183 Sand Lane, S.I., N.Y. 10305, has been honored with Mr. Cammarata's funeral arrangements, which include visiting on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at Holy Rosary Church on Friday at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Oceanview Cemetery in Oakwood.
