In memory of
Jean Bailey passed away at home in Birmingham on Thursday, May 16, 2019. Full of kindness and grace, she was the caring and devoted wife of Carl F. Bailey for 62 years, and loving mother of sons Carl C. Bailey (Cal) and Jeffry F. Bailey (Jeff). Born Jean Claire Jones in 1935 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to J.C. Jones and Floyd Viola Jones, she graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1956. During her senior year she met Carl and they married in 1956, enjoying a full and rewarding life together. They lived in four different cities in Louisiana, followed by Atlanta, Birmingham, Washington, D.C., Birmingham, and New Orleans, happily returning to Birmingham in 1980. Known for her classic taste and comfortable homes, her family was her first priority. Although private, her warmth and subtle wit were felt by many. She was a loving companion, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and dear friend. She is predeceased by her parents and survived by her husband, Carl, and her sons Cal and Jeff (John Lillis), granddaughter Frances Taber Bailey, sisters Janet Kirkfield (Bob), Pamela Waits (Mike) and their families, brother-in-law Larry Bailey (Beverly) and their family, Sandee Bailey, wife of J. Rushton Bailey (deceased) and their families and many cherished friends. Burial services will be private. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Canterbury United Methodist Church, Mountain Brook, Alabama. Visitation with family begins at 10am at Canterbury. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Carl F. and Jean J. Bailey Scholarship Fund at Birmingham Southern College, Canterbury United Methodist Church, or St. Vincent's Hospice.
