Seymour "Sy" Kaplan
Seymour "Sy" Kaplan Sun City Palm Desert - Seymour "Sy" Kaplan passed away peacefully in La Quinta on April 13, 2019, not long after celebrating his 95th birthday with close friends. Born February 28, 1924 to Morris and Fannie Kaplan, Sy served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 as a combat engineer in the 2nd, 4th, and 14th Armored Divisions, seeing service in North Africa, Italy, and France. He rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant and earned three Battle Stars and two Purple Hearts. In April 1945 he was grievously wounded in an enemy mortar attack in Czechoslovakia and returned to the U.S. a wounded warrior, 100 percent disabled. Following WWII Sy moved to Sharon, Massachusetts and owned and operated a construction company in the greater Boston area. He moved to Marina del Rey, California in 1987 and retired in 1991. He moved to the Palm Springs area in 1992, where he became the first resident board member—and eventually first resident president—of the 9,000+ member homeowner association at Sun City Palm Desert. Sy served as Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 78 (Coachella Valley) for many years. As such he was instrumental in the opening of the VA Clinic in Palm Desert, and he personally provided countless local veterans with advice and assistance in obtaining their earned VA benefits. He received the Senior Inspiration Award from Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson in 2001. Wilson also appointed Sy the first chair of the Desert Palms Community Council. Sy was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris in 2010, and by their daughter Ellen who passed away as a teenager. He is survived by their daughter Ilona Kaplan Gasparro. A memorial service was held at Sun City Palm Desert on May 11, 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 78, PO Box 13052, Palm Desert, CA, 92255.
