Sgt. Thomas Arthur Barton Ret'd.
Sgt. Thomas Arthur Barton, Ret'd. Cerritos, CA - Tom was born February 3, 1943 in Brookline, Mass to Harold Barton and Mary Donnelly. Tom was Irish and Scottish and he loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in May, 2018. He lost his battle with the disease and passed away on March 2, 2019, in Cerritos, California His family moved to Bell, California 1947. The family of three girls and four boys resided in Bell for 21 years. Tom graduated from Bell High School in 1961. Tom's father passed away when Tom was only 15 years old. Surviving Tom are his two brothers, Kevin (Teri) Barton and Peter Barton. Tom's sisters, Barbara, June and Marie are all deceased as is his eldest brother Harold Barton. Tom began his career in law enforcement in South Gate, California early 1970's where he was lovingly tagged with the name of "Batman" by his fellow officers. Tom relocated his family to Palm Springs, California in 1972. He worked at Palm Springs Police Department until his retirement in 1999. He was one extraordinary detective and served as Watch Commander until he retired. He was deeply respected by his fellow officers who say Tom was an "icon" in the Department, working under five police chiefs during his 27 year tenure. Tom leaves behind his four children, Jill (Mark) Montoya, Shawn Drapp, Kacie (Jim) Donegan and Thomas Chad Barton. He adored his grandchildren, Jack, Natalee, Rachael, Sam, Audrey, Luke, Landyn, John and Bridget who will miss their Grandpa deeply, plus his step-son Greg Shear and many nephews & nieces. A Celebration of Life (Irish Wake) is planned in honor of this very special Officer's life on April 7, 2019 in Palm Springs, California.
