Grace Katherine Hughes Centenarian, Plainfield elementary teacher, direct descendant of of family that established Hughesville Grace Katherine Hughes, 100, a resident of Premier Cadbury at Cherry Hill, N.J., passed away on March 21, 2019. Graveside services will be held on March 28, 2019, at 11 a.m., at the Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church, 17 Greenwich Church Rd., Stewardsville, N.J. Born and raised in the Warren Glen section of Pohatcong Township, Grace was a direct descendant of the Hughes Family that established Hughesville, N.J. Many of her direct ancestors actively supported the American Revolution. She was a graduate of Phillipsburg (N.J.) High School, class of 1936. She obtained a B.S. in education from the New Jersey Teachers College at Trenton in 1940. Following graduation, she taught elementary school in Holland Township, N.J., for two years before accepting a teaching position in the Plainfield, N.J., school system where she taught for another 37 years. She traveled extensively during her lifetime including trips to Canadian Rockies, Grand Canyon, Eastern U.S., Jamaica, Mexico, Hawaii, England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Italy. She moved to Cherry Hill, N.J., in 2011 to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Hughes and Grace Bachman Hughes; her sisters, Elizabeth Hughes Zinn and Ruth Hughes Thomas; her nephew, William R. Thomas; and by her longtime companion, Francis Elwood Whitely. She is survived by her nephews, Richard H. Zinn of Meadville, Pa., Edward H. Zinn of Toledo, Ohio, and John H. Thomas of Delran, N.J.; as well as numerous great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
