Mary Ellen Schraner July 25, 1927 - March 11, 2019 Mary Ellen Schraner, 91, wife of the late Ernest Schraner of Milwaukie, Ore., died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by loving staff members at the Fountains Assisted Living Apartments March 11, 2019. Mary Ellen was born in Portland, July 25, 1927. She and her sister, Marge, grew up on her family's Silver Crest dairy farm in Milwaukie, Ore. During her youth, Mary Ellen drove the farm's milk truck, worked at the local soda fountain and climbed the water tower in the evenings to be on the lookout for enemy planes during WWII. She met the love of her life, Ernest, at a local Swiss American dance and the two were married April 14, 1951. Her beliefs influenced her to become a founding member of both Christ the King Catholic Parish and La Salle Catholic College Preparatory. Mary Ellen's passion for her culture manifested in many ways. In her late teens, she joined the Ladies Helvetia Alpengluehn Singing Society and the Swiss Ski Club. As an adult, she was a founding member of the Swiss Ladies Club, which ran an annual Swiss children's camp and helped provide college scholarships for students of Swiss ancestry. She also served as President of the Swiss American Society of Portland, Oregon. She participated in YLI for over 25 years, numerous board positions at Christ the King and La Salle and was always a room mother at school to all seven children. In addition to her husband, Ernest, Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her sister, Marge Feusi. A rosary service followed by the funeral will take place at 10 a.m.,Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at Christ the King Parish. A private interment will follow at Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest remembrances be made in Mary Ellen's name to the Ernest & Mary Ellen Schraner Christ the King Parish School Endowment Fund, or to the Ernest & Mary Ellen Schraner La Salle Catholic College Preparatory Endowment Fund.
