Joseph Luken
Joseph William Luken, 80 Navy veteran retired from IBM and became a computer teacher Joseph William Luken, born Sept. 26, 1938, died Feb.10, 2019. He lived in Great Kills for 53 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Judith M. Luken (nee West); son, Keith J. Luken (and wife Marina); daughter, Victoria Karnatski (and husband Jay); grandson, Dane Fioravante; and granddaughters, Amanda and Cassandra. He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey W. Luken. Joseph was born in Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1956 and then joined the U.S.Navy. He was stationed in the Atlantic and Caribbean as an electronic technician until his discharge in 1959. He was employed by RCA Communications as a communications technician. In 1967, he joined IBM and worked there for 30 years as a senior project manager. After retiring from IBM, he went to work at St. Catherine of Genoa in Brooklyn as a physical education and computer teacher. In 2008, he joined the staff of St. Joseph Hill Academy, Arrochar, as a computer teacher. He was involved in girls basketball for over 40 years, served as sports coordinator of St. Clare Church and director of the church's Cardinal Cooke Center; and was assistant girls basketball coach at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School. He was also an usher and a counter at St. Clare. Joseph loved to travel with his wife and family. He visited all 50 states. Joseph played cards with his friends as often as they could get together. He was an avid reader. Viewing will be Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Casey McCallum Rice Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass is Thursday, Feb. 14, at 9:45 a.m., at St. Clare Church, Nelson Avenue. Burial follows at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.
