In memory of
John Michael Melnicoe passed peacefully on Nov. 22, 2018 at home with his wife, son and other family close by, in the care of hospice. He had fought a courageous battle with cancer since 2009. Born in 1956, John grew up in Sacramento, and attended college at CSUS. He graduated with a master's degree in social work and a minor in criminal justice with honors and then spent another year completing his LCSW. He applied this knowledge and his blend of compassion, realistic responsibility and common sense to a 30-plus-year career in Child Protective Services, initially in Sacramento County. In 1998 he and his wife moved to Fort Bragg, a place they had been in love with since their 1983 honeymoon in Mendocino. He went to work for CPS in Mendocino County at the coast office where he worked with distinction, until he retired. After retirement, John spent time at the local Humane Society Shelter where he was an unofficial volunteer working with cats who had trouble integrating. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Scott Linton and his wife Christina; brother, Mark; sisters-in-law, Debbie Herman and Oleta Melnicoe; four grandchildren, Tyler, Brenna, Xander and Nataly; nephews, David and Eric; niece, Laura; uncles, Peter, Alan and Mel Melnicoe; Bill and Ethel Gofen; and numerous other relatives, as well as a lot of dear friends. John was predeceased by his brother, Rick, this year as well as both parents a number of years ago. Once in a while there is a person like John who lives life so fully, loves with all of their heart, is not afraid to be kind, creative or funny, and does not shrink from the responsibility of the moment no matter how tough it is. John was lit with a special kind of light. He will be so very missed. A celebration of life event will be scheduled in the spring of 2019. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, to please consider a donation in John's name to the charity of your choice.
