Donna Smith La Quinta - Donna Smith, 82, former principal of Chatsworth High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District, passed away peacefully at her home in Palm Desert on December 3, 2018. Donna was born on March 31, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward and Alicia Bumba. She grew up with four brothers: Edward Jr., Robert, Richard and Ronald. Donna attended Beloit College in Wisconsin, where she met her future husband, Kent Smith. After graduating from college, Donna and Kent moved to Los Angeles, California, where they both started their teaching careers. During her 38 years in the Los Angeles Unified School District, she served as a teacher, and went on to become a Dean, Counselor, and Assistant Principal at various schools. After accumulating these valuable experiences, Donna was promoted to the position of Principal of Chatsworth High School in 1983, serving in that capacity until her retirement in 1995. After retiring, Donna and Kent moved to La Quinta, California, where they enjoyed the desert lifestyle with family and friends. Donna's kind and compassionate nature will be her survivors; being her children: Kathy Smith of Palm Desert, CA, Lance (Tina) Smith of Seattle, WA; grandchildren: Audrey and Tate Smith; brothers: Edward (Diane) Bumba of St Louis, MO, Robert (Kalah) Bumba of Salinas, CA ,,Ronald (Leslie) Bumba of New Hampton, IA, and those she was fiercely devoted to and loved. She is preceded in death by her husband Kent, who passed away in 2000; and her brother, Richard Bumba, who passed away earlier this year. Following her upbringing in the Roman Catholic Church, Donna's faith was extremely important to her. She loved going to Mass and was an active member of the churches she attended. Her Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 7, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palm Desert, staring with a Rosary at 1:30 and Mass at 2:00pm. She will be laid to rest on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at San Fernando Mission Cemetery, Mission Hills, CA at 12:00 noon. FitzHenry-Wiefels Palm Desert has been entrusted with arrangements.
