GAIL JOHN GRONEWALD September 13, 1923 ˜ November 22, 2018 Gail John Gronewald of Vancouver, WA, passed away Nov. 22, 2018. He was born in Soda Springs, ID on Sept. 13, 1923 to John Almon and Stella H. (Peck) Gronewald. Gail graduated from the Dalles High School as the Class President. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University. Gail served in the U.S. Army in World War II, earning 2 purple hearts and 1 bronze star. He married Jean Hays in Vancouver, WA on June 22, 1945. They lived in Corvalis, Walla Walla, Anchorage and here in Vancouver since 1966. Gail worked as a Civil Engineer for the U.S. Corps of Engineers. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 52 years where he was an Elder. He was also a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, Elks Club, Boy Scout leader, and was a PTA and Booster Club President. Gail enjoyed traveling, golf, gardening, crossword puzzles and carpentry projects. He would always take his kids water or snow skiing, camping, fishing and huckleberry picking. Gail never missed the sports events his children were in. He was famous for his smoked salmon and Sunday biscuits and gravy. Gail is survived by his sons, Jack and Tom Gronewald (Patti); daughters, Barbi Papenfuse (Kaare) and Patti Gronewald (Mark Ralph); twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his younger brother, Harry Gronewald. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean; his youngest son, Jim Gronewald; and two sisters. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Thurs., Dec. 6, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. The Celebration of Life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Sat., Jan. 12, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Special thanks to the loving and loyal caregivers and staff at Glenwood Senior Living.
