Catherine Ranaghan Monn
PORTLAND – Catherine Ranaghan Monn, 96, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, at Falmouth by the Sea. Born in Portland on Jan. 20, 1922, Catherine was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Costello) Ranaghan. She attended Cathedral Grammar School and graduated from Cathedral High School. After graduation, she went to work for Hunnewell Trucking Company as an office clerk. Later, she worked for Burnham-McLellan Contractors. In later years, she worked for Porteaus and the Jordan Marsh Co. Catherine was a devout Catholic and former communicant of the former St. Patrick's Church where she was a member of the Women's Council and volunteered for numerous activities. In 1947 she married Walter A. Monn who predeceased her in 2012. Together, they shared 65 years of marriage, raising their family in the Rosemont neighborhood of Portland. Throughout their marriage they spent many wonderful summers at the lake, winters in Pompano Beach, Florida, enjoyed walking the boulevard, spending time on Cape Cod and traveling to the World Fairs in New York and Montreal. Above all else, Catherine was dedicated to her family and enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She supported them in every way she could by attending school activities and sporting events. Holidays became more important to her because she took pleasure in watching her three great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Catherine is predeceased by her brothers, Richard, Thomas and Edward Ranaghan; her favorite aunt, Nellie Costello, was an important relative in her home. She is survived by her daughter Margaret Govednik of Bristol, R.I., sons Stephen Monn and partner Katherin O'Grady of Cumberland, Michael Monn and wife Sharon of West Falmouth; four grandchildren, Jonathan Govednik and Brian Govednik and wife Jane all of Bristol, R.I., Lindsay (Monn) Corcoran and Jamie of Gray, and Hannah Monn of Boston. In addition, she is survived by her great-grandchildren, Brian Jr. and Eve Govednik of Bristol, RI, and Emmitt Corcoran of Gray. The family would like to recognize the staff at Foreside Harbor and Falmouth by the Sea who provide care with dignity and kindness. Visiting hours celebrating Catherine's life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 2 from 12-2 p.m. at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, Dec. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
