Roy James Mason, 84, of Farmington, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. He was born at home, May 14, 1934, in Hay Gulch near Breen, Colorado to Isabelle and Stanley Mason. Roy grew up in an area known as "Hay Gulch" west of Breen, Colorado with one older sister and two younger brothers. He graduated from Durango High School in May 1952, where he met and later married Clara May Billings from the Animas Valley north of Durango. They were married 64 years until Clara passed in November of 2017. Roy and Clara moved to Farmington in 1960 and were members of the community ever since. Roy was a dedicated family man and worked hard to support his family through the years. He had several successful business ventures, most notably managing the Shell station at Main and Vine and later managing the General Tire store in Farmington for many years. He was active in many civic organizations, serving a term as Rotary Club president and several terms as an officer in the Elks Club, including the Exalted Ruler in 1988. He also served as Farmington High School Booster club president and President of the Farmington Amateur Baseball Congress. Once he retired in 1989, he devoted much of his energy to his work at the First Presbyterian Church where he and Clara were members since 1966 . He also pursued golf as a hobby he never seemed to have time for prior to retirement. He was a regular at Pinon Hills Golf Course. He enjoyed watching sports and attended every Connie Mack World Series held in Farmington until this year when his health did not permit it. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Isabelle and Stanley Mason, his wife Clara Mason, and his brother Johnny. He is survived by his daughters Marilee (Steve) Dexel and Charlotte Mason; son Roy (Sherry) Mason; sister Betty McConnel; brother Jerry (Sharon) Mason; grandchildren Levi Dexel, Meagan (Anthony) Liu, Nathan (Ashley) Paschke, Sam Mason, Riley Mason, Taylor Dexel; great-grandchildren Molli Liu and Hugo Paschke. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, 865 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington with Megan Cullip officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church endowment fund at 865 N. Dustin Ave., Farmington, NM 87401.
