In memory of
Phyllis Rice
PHYLLIS RICE Resident of Trinidad, CA April 10, 1938 September 28, 2018 Phyllis Jean (Peltonen) Rice was born in Hibbing, Minnesota on April 10, 1938 and passed away peacefully with family by her side on September 28, 2018 at her daughter's home in the Bay Area. As a young child, she moved with her family to Humboldt County in the 1940s, where her father, Walter, opened a grocery store. Phyllis adored her father and learned about business from him. Her mother, Mary, was an incredible homemaker, but Phyllis always wanted to be out exploring the outside world, not following conventions. She loved playing out in nature with her brother, Bud, and her best friend, Jeanine. After marrying, Bob Rice, post college, she was a schoolteacher, and then found her love of art and antiques and became an antique dealer in Hopland (later in Humboldt County). She was also a painter and loved oils and water colors throughout her life. She and Bob raised their children, Leslie, Michael, Julie and Holly in Fort Bragg and Ukiah in the 1960s through the early 90s. Their son, Tommy, who died in 1966, and her husband, Bob, who died in 2000, predeceased her. She and Bob moved from Ukiah to Trinidad, California (Big Lagoon) in 1994. They loved to travel, walk along the beach and canoe together. Phyllis adored talking with her children, friends, and truly everyone. She had a passion for politics, the arts, (romantic) films (she loved Out of Africa), and she truly adored her loyal best friend, Jimmy (her dog). She had a romantic sensibility and an artist's spirit. Phyllis was an idealist and a dreamer. Her spirit carries on in her children and grandchildren, Catie, Kevin and Connor.
