Mary Louise (Bitzer) Carpenter
GREENFIELD - Mary Louise (Bitzer) Carpenter, 67, a resident of the Weldon House, 54 High Street, Greenfield, MA, died Monday evening, September 24, 2018 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA, following complications from diabetes and kidney failure. A native of Greenfield, MA, she was born on February 23, 1951 to Jeannette L. (Houston) Bitzer and Robert F. Bitzer. Mary was educated in Greenfield Public Schools. She was employed by Oxford Pickle, South Deerfield, MA, later for the Buckley Health Care Center, Greenfield, MA in the dining services and lastly, for Kimball's Laundry in Greenfield, MA. She married Richard L. Carpenter, on April 30, 1971 at Robbins Memorial Church, Greenfield, MA, with then Pastor, Rev. Roy Leo officiating. Sadly, their marriage ended in divorce. Mary enjoyed many leisure time activities that included; vegetable gardening, shopping for "bargains" (with her youngest daughter Elaine) attending the annual Franklin County Fair, (where she was a frequent exhibitor in the Round House), drawing, coloring, sewing and crocheting (blankets for family and friends) dancing, watching movies, dining out at the "99" (where she enjoyed the "chicken fingers") and Village Pizza. Mary enjoyed making the holiday season memorable for her family at Thanksgiving and Christmas (which was her favorite) Her family was the centerpiece of her life and she worked very hard to provide for them. She was immensely proud of her children and extended family. Mary is lovingly remembered by her children: Elaine Wanderlick of Greenfield, MA; Carol Leduc and her husband Joe, of Orange, MA; Richard L. Carpenter of Belmont, NH and Kevin A. Carpenter, of Erving, MA. Additionally, Mary leaves her four grandchildren to remember her with affection: Joseph Leduc, Sireana Leduc-Webb and her husband Colby, Tiffany Leduc and Brandan Leduc, along with her great grandson Christopher Logan Webb. Mary also leaves her loving and devoted father, Robert F. Bitzer, of Erving, MA, and her Aunts Arlene Carey and Joyce MacIntire and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews and several cousins. She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents: John and Mary (Steiner) Bitzer, her maternal grandparents: Paul and Mary Houston, her beloved mother Jeannette L. (Houston) Bitzer, her loving step-mother Gloria (Bartley) Bitzer, her son Steven Carpenter and brother Gary Rand Carpenter, daughter-in-law Samantha (Miller) Carpenter, her former husband Richard L. Carpenter, as well as her Aunts and Uncles: Margaret and Glenn Hammond and Edward and Alice (Davenport) Bitzer. In keeping with Mary's interests in simplicity, graveside services will be observed on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 at the Green River Cemetery, Greenfield, MA at 1:00PM. Rev. Corey Sanderson, Pastor, of the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield will officiate. Visiting hours are omitted. At the request of Mary's family, flowers have been asked to be omitted, preferring instead that a memorial contribution be considered in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, 2451 Crystal Drive, Suite 900, Arlington, VA 22202 or to the National Kidney Foundation, Inc., 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016, 1-800-622-9010. The McCarthy Funeral Homes of Greenfield and Turners Falls, MA, have been entrusted with the arrangements. Guest book and condolence message available at www.mccarthyfuneral homes.com
