Betty was a life-long resident of Caledonia who enjoyed sharing her life with family, friends, and lots of fishing. Betty grew up on a farm which nurtured her love for animals and the outdoors. At one point in her adult life she left her social work career and helped run a dairy farm with her brother. She spent summers on Green Lake as a child, became quite a fisherman and was a proponant of catch and release. She played softball, gave swimming lessons, and played drums in her high school band. She continued playing drums in a praise band at her church for many years. Betty was a graduate of Caledonia High School and Grand Valley State University (MS Social Work). She spent her career life helping others through her employment with the YWCA and Pine Rest Christian Hospital. In addition, she volunteered at the Dutton Food Pantry and Degage in Grand Rapids. Her wit and wisdom will be greatly missed by her sisters and brother, Sharon (Bob) Weaver, Shirley (Gary) Besteman, Jim (Sherri) Martin and her nieces and nephew Margie (AL) Cho, Bob Weaver, III, Jennie (Jim) Veltman, Kim Besteman, and their children; Micah and Noelle Cho, Madie, Riley, and Tana Weaver, Reese and Orrie Veltman. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Orrie and Dorothy Martin. At her request, cremation has taken place. Her family will meet friends on Friday evening, September 28th, from 6 to 8 pm in the fellowship room of Caledonia UM Church, 250 Vine Street. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 29th at 4 pm also at the church. The family wants to thank Betty's dear friends, Nancy Moody, Sue Manes, Paulette Waldron, Kim Schuh, and Step Maxson, who spent countless hours with her during the last month of her life. The family is also appreciative of her Hospice nurses Jennifer and Jenny. In lieu of flower, donations to Faith Hospice of Grand Rapids or God's Country Cooperative Parish, 110 West Harrie St., Newberry, MI 49868 would be appreciated.
