In memory of
Lauren V. Merritt
Lauren V. Merritt May 12, 1940 – August 12, 2018 Resident of Sunnyvale Lauren Vail Merritt was born in Chicago, Illinois to LeRoy & Mary Merritt, though Lauren's family soon moved west to El Cerrito California where he spent his formative years, as his father worked at the School of Librarianship at Cal Berkeley. After finishing at El Cerrito High School, his next adventure began with a trip south on the Amtrak Coast Starlight bound for Southern California to become a freshman at Caltech. Nearly 20 years later he returned to Silicon Valley, with his wife Stephanie, two young children, and a Masters in Electrical Engineering (1963). He applied his EE degree to start-ups large and small, historied firms like Ampex, and giants like Lockheed Martin. It was from the latter that he retired in 2003, having seen his designs orbiting the Earth on the ISS, and orbiting the Sun on Pioneer. After retirement he endured the slow progression of Parkinson's Disease, filling his days with travel, writing poetry, serving as deacon at Valley Presbyterian Church, and spending time with his family. Lauren is survived by his brother James (Myrna) of Oregon City OR, his sister Jeannette (David) Lord of Nordland WA, his sons Paul (Jody) & Carl (Monika) of Sunnyvale and San Jose, and his four grandchildren Michael, Serafina, Kate, and Elise. Those wishing to honor Lauren's memory are invited to make contributions to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, and a memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley, CA on September 30th, 2018 at 3PM.
