In memory of
Maria Magdalena SPEARE
SPEARE, Maria Magdalena Maria Magdalena Speare was born in Elzach Germany, June 1, 1921 and went home to be with her Husband in rest on the evening of Thursday, September 6th. She was the oldest of four siblings, raised in the Black Forest village of Elzach, Germany. She blessed her family with her loving sense of adventure and strong will. As a teen, she loved to hike the Alps and ride her motorbike. Maria landed in America through Ellis Island, NY in 1939. She came to visit the US for a summer visit three days before war broke out in Deutschland and ended up staying as a consequence of the war. She met the love of her life, Ralph Speare, and they were married December 2, 1943. She worked in a local, family owned bakery when she first arrived in Spokane, and later in grocery and retail while raising her two children. She is survived by her sister Berta, daughter Carol, and son Steven along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, many still in Germany. Maria taught us many things about pride and integrity, and was always a strong force to be reckoned with. She prided herself on always doing the right thing, and hard work. She was community minded and gave many years of volunteer service with her husband Ralph, to counseling the families of the Alcoholic Anonymous community in Bremerton and Spokane WA. She loved crocheting (There are many recipients of warm cozy blankets by her hands!), and camping. She happily spent many weekends on the Pend Oreille River. Oma you will be missed dearly! We love you! Funeral and interment Thursday, September 13 at 2 pm at Holy Cross Cemetery at the Chapel, located at 7200 N. Wall St., Spokane, WA 99208.
