James Joshua Kratzer 1941 - 2018 Springfield, IL—Mr. James J. Kratzer succumbed to a long term illness and died peacefully Friday, September 7th. Born in Springfield, Illinois on February 8th, 1941, Jim was the valedictorian of Lincoln grade school and graduated with high honors from Springfield High School (National Merit Finalist). He attended the University of Illinois and was accepted into Omega Beta Pi Hippocratic fraternity. He also attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. James graduated from MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois in 1972 with membership in Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology. James Kratzer worked as an orderly at St. John's Hospital and as a psychiatric unit orderly at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After living in several cities in the Midwest, Jim returned home to Springfield and helped care for his aging parents. In his last years, Jim was a long term resident of the Aperion Capitol Care of Springfield. James Kratzer is survived by his brother, John G. Kratzer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sister, Shirley A. Hudson of Springfield, Illinois, and brother, David E. Kratzer of Alachua, Florida. James was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Joshua Kratzer, mother, Hilda Aileen Kratzer and older brother, Chris J. Kratzer. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory can be made to the Memorial Hospital Transplant Services in care of the Memorial Hospital Foundation at memorialmedical.com or call 217.788.4700. Arrangements are under the care of Staab Funeral Home-Springfield and graveside services will be conducted 11:00 am, Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Pleasant Plains Cemetery in Pleasant Plains, Illinois 62677.
