MATTHEW "PAP" STATON
Mr. Matthew "Pap" Staton, 78, of 26022 Troublefield Rd., Stony Creek, VA, went home to be with Jesus on September 7, 2018, at Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond, VA. Born to the late Robert Staton and Lula Thomas Staton in Williamson, N.C., Matthew grew up in Tarboro N.C. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; the love of his life Mattie Pulley Jones; and two step children Larry and Daisy Jones; and close cousin, James (Junie) Burrow. Pap moved to Virginia 50+ years ago to start a new life. He was a a hard worker and a man of many talents. Pap worked on various farms and sawmills in the Dinwiddie and Sussex county area. He retired from B.T. Hawthorne Sawmill. Amongst his many hobbies, Mr. Pap loved to help people in the area. Whether it was cooking a hog for an event or providing people with wood to keep their houses warm. His warm smile, his funny jokes and words of wisdom will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Pap is survived by two step children John E. (JohnnyCake) Jones and Eula Mae (Mickey) Jones, both of Stony Creek, VA; grandchildren, Katina White of Midlothian, VA, Tara J. Yates (Gregory) of Petersburg, VA, George Jones (Shyan) of Stony Creek, and twins, Shyrell & Tyrell Clanton of Petersburg, VA; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren. All of his many cousins and family members of the Staton family out of North Carolina and Norfolk, Virginia. Devoted cousins, Lily Beatrice (Bea) Burrow of Stony Creek, VA, and Christopher Burrow of Stony Creek. Pap was definitely a people person. He had many friends. Among them devoted are: The Pulley Family, The Shands families of Troublefield and Flatfoot Road Stony Creek, VA, Jesse Parham, Alton Parham, George (Mill) Meade, George (Bootyboy) Jefferson, Louise Pegram, Scot Farber Davis, Pattie Freeman, Pernall Shands. William Streat, Leon Philips, and Clint Parham. Special thanks to the Critical Care and Palliative Care staff of the MCV Hospital medical team for taking excellent care of Mr. Staton his time of illness. A homegoing will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of Johnson Funeral, with Rev. Linda Skipper, officiating, associate minister of the St. John Baptist Church, Stony Creek. Burial will follow at the Jones Family Cemetery, Stony Creek. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, 530 South Sycamore Street, Petersburg. (804) 863-4411.
