In memory of
LEWIS George Cook Lewis (Age 92) Completed the back nine of his life on August 29, 2018 and has been reunited with his beloved wife, Rosemary. George was born in Washington, DC on July 28, 1926 to Earl Raymond Lewis, Maj (USA Ret) and Teresia Cook Lewis and was the 7th of 9 children. George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Rosemary Ann Lewis, daughter, Katherine Marie, two brothers, Raymond Earl and Edward Grant, and five sisters, Pet, Helene, Elsie, Jeanne and Grace. Left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life are three children, Edward Grant Lewis, Sr. (Beverly), Michael George Lewis (Eileen), Thomas Kent Lewis (Jean); four grandchildren, Jennifer Lee Lewis, Edward Grant Lewis Jr, Kyle Thomas Lewis, and Amy Marie Lewis; five great-grandchildren, Christopher David Lewis, Kaylyn Rosemarie Anderson, Michael Grant Lewis, Thomas Wade Lewis (Lynn) and Johnny Lewis; as well as three great-great-grandchildren, Leonard Wade Lewis, William Lane Lewis and Silas Ellison Grubb. George is also survived by a younger sister Dotti Watkins (Joe) of Taneytown, MD. George enlisted in the Navy in 1944 at 17 years of age and served in the Pacific during WWII on the aircraft carrier USS Gilbert Islands, CVS 107. After the war he was discharged from the Navy and worked at Breezy Point Beach, MD as a lifeguard where he was introduced to the love of his life, Rosemary, by her Mother, Marie, in the summer of 1946. After an extended, cross-town courtship, they were married in April, 1951 and had four children. George and Rosemary lived briefly in Washington, DC before moving to Maryland. George, having used the GI Bill to go back to school and get his degree, was able to get into the Government working for the Navy Dept., starting as a clerk typist and retiring as a GS-15, Financial Manager in 1980. Prior to his retirement, George and Rosemary began their search for a retirement home away from the heat and congestion of the city. Their first visit was to Wintergreen Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA. Rosemary stood on a boulder overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, where their condo would be built in 1978, and exclaimed, "This is it!" George and Rosemary would move to Wintergreen full time in 1980. George would fill his early days in retirement skiing, playing tennis and golf. After a few years he turned his focus primarily to golf where he became quite a legend at Devils Knob Golf Course; carding 4 holes-in-one in an 18 month span, winning numerous club championships, and shooting his career best round of 69. George played golf at Devils Knob for 35 years, often playing 36 holes a day, and occasionally, 45 holes when coaxed into it by a friend wanting to get in a quick nine before dark. Rosemary passed unexpectedly in 2008, at the age of 81, but George remained at Wintergreen until the fall of 2013, finally being pried off the mountain at his family's request at the age of 87. George entered a retirement community, The Hidenwood, where he resided for the final 4 1/2 years of his life, so he could be closer to family in the Hampton Roads, VA area. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to The Hidenwood, as well as, Grace Hospice and Visiting Angels for their efforts to keep our Father safe and comfortable in his final years/months. George will be forever remembered by friends and family for his keen sense of humor, kindness, and his unconditional and unwavering love and support for his family; all five generations! He was indeed the bedrock of the Lewis family. Friends may call on Thursday, September 27, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. at DEMAINE FUNERAL HOME - FAIRFAX, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, VA.
