AUSTRALIA - Sally Hier Lyons, 72, of Moggill, Queensland, Australia, formerly of Vermont, died Sept. 1, 2018, following a heart attack. She was born in Vergennes, the daughter of Lloyd M. and Lillian (Jay) Hier. Sally graduated from Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon, attended the University of Vermont, and received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. She married Michael Lyons of Moggill. Sally's first career was in retail management, and she was manager of the W.T. Grant store in Brattleboro. After completing her studies in Brisbane, she worked for many years for the government of Queensland as a corrections counselor, seeking to help people in the probation system to rebuild their lives. After retiring, she created quilts and other handicrafts, and helped Michael with growing and selling orchids. Sally is survived by her husband, Michael Lyons, of Moggill; three brothers Gary Hier. of Winooski, Curtis Hier. of Fair Haven. and Bruce Hier, of Raleigh, NC; three sisters Gail Ashley, of Brandon, Joyce Errecart, of Shelburne, and Marsha Henry, of Glen Burnie, MD; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Lloyd J. Hier. A memorial service will be held Sept. 17 in Queensland, and a service will be held in Pittsford at a later date.
