In memory of
Barry Shelkin Of Alexandria, VA, died peacefully the night of Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at the age of 89. Born on October 11, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY to Henry and Jane Shelkin, Barry is survived by his loving wife, Agnes Shelkin, his sons, Pete, Michael, and Paul, as well as by his twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who he adored with all his heart. Barry served in United States Marine Corps as a machine gun crewman in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII and later in China during the post-war disarmament. He then re-enlisted with USMC to serve during the Korean War. After receiving his honorable discharge from the service, Barry married Agnes Mokarry in 1952. Their love carried them through the decades, and Barry died three days before what would have been their 66th wedding anniversary. After graduating from Brooklyn College in 1955, Barry took a job with Gulf Oil which led him to move his growing family first to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands and then to Lagos, Nigeria. Upon moving back to the United States, he began a career in National Defense, the majority of which was spent with the Defense Mapping Agency. In retirement, Barry enjoyed the company of his grandchildren as well as several hobbies such as restoring automobiles and running marathon races. In later years, he became active in the Mount Vernon RECenter where he was a dedicated member of the Rowing Rats rowing team and enjoyed competing in the Senior Olympics. Barry's ashes will be interred with military honors at a private ceremony at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Inova Health Foundation in his name.
