Charles J. Coffey
Charles J. Coffey, 96 of Somerset, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018. He was the husband of Patricia (Turner) Coffey for 67 years. Born in Newton, MA, a son of the late James and Josephine (Riley) Coffey, he lived in Somerset for the last 18 years, and in Swansea for 46 years. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Newton and served his country in the U.S. Navy for 22 years, a career which spanned WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served aboard PT 548 over seas, and spent a number of years at the naval base in Newport, RI. He later worked as a custodian at the North Attleboro and Taunton post offices for a number of years. He cherished time spent with family and friends, especially those at North Farm Estates. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and loved his country. Mr. Coffey was a member of the American Legion in Swansea for 50 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Bernard W. Coffey and his wife Brenda of Warren, RI; a granddaughter, Cassandra L. Maritato, her husband Anthony, and their children Isabella Rose, Juliana Lynn and Emilia Marie all of Buffalo, NY; a sister-in- law Susan Coffey of Swansea along with several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Helen Till, Catherine E. McCarty, George, James and William Coffey. His funeral will be held Saturday, September 8 at 9 AM from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA with a 10 AM funeral mass in St. Patricks Church, South St., Somerset. Burial to follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Swansea. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours Friday 4-7 PM.
