Mathilda H. Cali
Mathilda "Dale" Hofmann Cali of Marlborough, formerly of Concord and Acton, died at home on July 11, aged 96. A poet, public school teacher, perpetual student, lover of the natural world, worker in communities, voice for social justice, seeker of understanding and peace, she was a vibrant force for good throughout her life. Born in a Transylvanian Saxon village in Romania, she grew up in Rhode Island after immigrating in 1930. With her husband J. Paul Cali, an analytical chemist, she raised a family in Concord and then Maryland when Paul took a position with the National Bureau of Standards. They returned to Massachusetts after his retirement. Dale is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Dale Laurian Berlied (Henry P., Jr.), Andrea Cali Hughes (Michael), Elaine Arden Cali, and Nancy Cali (Brian Lord); grandchildren Deborah Berlied Pollard and Henry Paul Berlied III, Emily Hughes Ilich and Nicholas Cali Hughes, Alexandra Wax Henkoff, and Juliana Elizabeth Lord; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial celebration service will be held Saturday, September 29, 2:00 PM, at St. John Lutheran Church, 16 Great Rd., Sudbury.
