Richard Lee "Dick" Miller
Richard Lee Miller of DeRuyter, NY, formerly of Syracuse, NY. Born in Syracuse, February 28, 1933 to the Late Francis John and Lillian Miller, (Blanchard). Graduated from Blodgett Vocational High School, 1951. Attended classes at Syracuse University for Engineering. He was employed by New York State, D.O T. for 39 years. Started as an Engineering Technican in 1956, and was a Civil Engineer in Highway Planning when he retired in 1995. Married in 1956 to June Recor, he moved to DeRuyter in 1962, with their 2 daughters. They continued to raise five children in DeRuyter. Before moving to DeRuyter, he and his wife were volunteers at the Salvation Army in Syracuse, working with youth groups, playing in the band and teaching Sunday School. On moving to DeRuyter, Dick joined the DeRuyter Fire Department in 1963, where he served as a Line officer, Bingo treasurer and Fire Police Captain. He worked every year at the DeRuyter Fair doing much of the electrical work in the tents, buildings and grounds. He became an Honorary member in 2015. He was a member of the United Church of DeRuyter, served on the Church board and was a Deacon. He sang in the church choir, was a Sunday School teacher and worked with the youth group. For many years he kept the church carillon bells repaired and working. He was a 4-H Leader and member of the Ruritan club. He Loved music and sang in a Barbershop Quartet, the Crown City Chorus, The Community Choir. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Lorraine Rueb (Konrad) of Falmouth, KY formerly of Homer, NY. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, June; his children, Theresa Paddock, (Joe Fallon), Mark, (Debbie), Kristine Breed (John), and Nicole Miller-Hood. Also survived by 15 grandchildren; Travis Baker, Matthew Paddock, (Stephanie), Bethanie Wenke, (Eric), Rebecca Cremeans, (Clay), Laura, Joseph, and Gabe (Danica) Rueb, Melissa Lyon, (Chris Clukey), Brandon, (Ashley) and Brett Miller, Katy Sartwell, (Richard), Sarah Skutt, (Patrick), Samantha Breed, Kemper Kline and Zachary Hood. Ten great-grandchildren; Austin, Dakota, Hunter, Cheyenne, Taylor-Jane, Kylie, Kenzie, Mackenna, Riley, and Owen. Brothers, Donald, (Carolyn) and Francis, (Leona). Donations in his memory may be made to the DeRuyter Fire company or Hospice of CNY. The funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, DeRuyter. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, DeRuyter. Calling hours will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Date of Death: August 17, 2018
