In memory of
MARY JOAN MALAR
Mary Joan Malar, 94 Mary Joan Malar died peacefully at home on July 7, 2018, at the age of 94. Joan -she went by her middle name - was born on Jan. 20, 1924, in Southold, Long Island, N.Y., to Peter Joseph Mahoney II and Mary Mildred Mahoney (nee Kenney), and was raised in Brooklyn along with her three brothers, Peter Joseph Mahoney III, Fr. John Kenney Mahoney, and Paul Dermot Mahoney. Joan earned a bachelor of science degree from Pratt Institute in 1946, did graduate work at Teachers College, Columbia University, and in her 20s worked as a nutritionist for Beech-Nut and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Joan married Walter Malar of Ansonia, Conn., in June 1948, and Joan and Walter settled in the Midwood section of Brooklyn and had eight children, Gail Wallace (Darryl), Mary Jo Hansen (Mark), Walter John (Maureen), Elizabeth Thomas (Leonard), Nancy Burke (Michael), Gregory, and the late Mary Lynn and Patrice. The couple was married for 67 years until Walter's death in 2015. Joan approached all aspects of her life with elegance, style, and grace, from the clothes she wore (and made), to the way she danced the Lindy Hop, to the sentences she crafted in her wonderful letters. She enjoyed helping people and was always there to listen, guide, and advise in her warm way. After her children were grown, Joan worked in academic advisement at Brooklyn College, perhaps her favorite job, helping young people navigate through their college days. Later in life, Joan was bitten by the travel bug, making her first trip abroad at age 79, a 3-week tour of Japan with her brother. Trips to England, France, and Ireland followed. In addition to six of her children, Joan is survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held yesterday at the Colonial Funeral Home, 2819 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, N.Y. 10306. For further information, please see bit.ly/joanmalar. A Funeral Mass will be held for Joan on Wednesday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, where Joan's parents were married almost 100 years ago. St. Peter's is located at 53 St. Mark's Place, Staten Island, N.Y.10301. Her family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Joan make a donation to CJ First Candle cjfirstcandle.org .
