Dr. George C. Kelley
Dr. George C. Kelley, 84, passed away unexpectedly on May 9, 2018 at his residence on DeRuyter Lake . Born in Apulia Station, N.Y. in May 1934 George graduated from Tully High School. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Science Education at SUNY Cortland, his Masters Degree from Cornell University and his PH.D. in Geology from Syracuse University. During his teaching career, Dr. Kelley taught math and science at Owego, and the SUNY Cortland Campus School where he also supervised student teachers. His love of the outdoors led him to work with the outdoor education programs at the SUNY Cortland's Camp Huntington on Raquette Lake. Upon completing his PH. D. Dr. Kelley did some adjunct teaching at several colleges, and accepted a position teaching at Onondaga Community College. He was also a Full Visiting Professor at Syracuse University. In 1998 he was presented the SUNY Chancellor's Award for excellence in teaching. In addition to teaching, Dr. Kelley performed field work for the U.S. Geological Survey and did consulting work for the U.S. Department of the Interior Office of Surface Mining. Upon his retirement after 42 years of teaching, Dr. Kelley returned to his residence on DeRuyter Lake. He was active in the New York State Federation of Lake Associations (NYSFOLA) serving as President and on the Executive committee George enjoyed boating, fishing, Hunting and entertaining friends. Dr. Kelley is survived by his two sons, Kevin W. Kelley and David S. Kelley, their mother, Dorothy M. Kelley, two granddaughters, Kathleen and Margaret Kelley, three great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Kameron, and Kaiya, a sister Beverly (Nichols) Sternbergh two nieces Lynda (Nichols) Beardsley and Tamara (Nichols) Mariotti and several grandnieces, grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. Calling hours will be held June 18, 2018 from 6-8 PM at the Smith Funeral Home in DeRuyter NY. The family Plans a Private Memorial service at a later date. Date of Death: May 9, 2018
